To build healthy communities, we need to start with a realistic view of our current situation (Things as they are).

Next we need to define as precisely as possible the future we would like to create (Things as they can be). Third, we must identify strategies that will help us close the gap—and finally, we must take the actions necessary to move toward our goals.

We have seen this model work for individuals hundreds of times in almost 40 years of working with the LifeDesign process. This or something very similar is a common part of effective planning and goal-setting processes used by successful organizations in both the profit and non-profit sectors.

We can improve our communities using the same model. The apparent simplicity of the high-level view shown above could lead you to think this is going to be a piece of cake.

Make no mistake about it—the kind of change we think is needed is definitely on the hard-to-do list and there are no quick fixes. At the same time, it's urgent that we begin now and enlist as many people as possible in the effort.
